Using one main reverb across your tracks makes for a much better mix then using separate reverbs on different channels, as the different reflexions will interact inside your mix and muddy-up stuff pretty quick. This is often used to setup a reverb-bus that you channel most stuff into that needs reverb.

In this last case you don't need yet another bus to add the FX to yoyr drum mix, as the drum bus already is a main channel that sums your drum sounds.Ģ. You do this when you want to level-adjust a complete drum mix without touching the faders of the individual drum sounds (so you would mess up the mix of individual sounds) and/or when you want to have separate FX on certain drum sounds (like a transient shaper on the kick) and also want certain FX on the whole drum mix (like a compressor to glue your drums together or fatten your drum track). creating a submix, like sending individual drum sounds into a drum-bus. There are basically two scenarios where you actually NEED a bus:ġ. Only use a bus when there is a clear need for that. I think you are needlessly complicating matters, and actually set yourself up for failure. I am getting in a habit to have a bus(parent/master folder) for all my instruments. The main thing is don't over do it which is easy to do, i guess it depends a lot on genre but i like a natural but fat sounding kit You will most likely have to balance up the cymbals again. Now turn this track right down, unsolo, solo your drum buss, now bring up the NY track and hear how it thickens up the drums without them loosing all there natural life, they just sound fatter.
Now solo the NY track and compress the hell out of it, its up to you how you set the compressor but i like to still have some transient poking through so there is a sense of attack still. Now create sends from the kick, snare & toms to the NY track, i don't like sending cymbals to the NY track as they can get all wierd with loads of compression.ĭon't forget to send the NY track to the Bus if you have one !
Make a track at the end of your drum tracks and before your drum bus ( if you have one )and call it NY comp ( or something to your liking ). There are easier ways to achieve NY compression in reaper, but i feel this method which is somewhat old school might help you understand it better. I don't use folders but heres how i do it, i like to work left to right like on a console. The AC1 from audiocation is an 1176 style and is free if you'd like to try it out, An 1176 style compressor ( fast attack ) is probably the most common for Parallal or(New York style) compression.
